The Best Credit Cards for Hotel Rewards

May 7th 2016

Hotel rewards cards are a good fit for those who travel often and tend to stick to one hotel line. Be sure to browse other options such as airline, grocery and gas rewards cards to get the most benefits based on what you buy the most.

The Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Card

When you sign up for this rewards card, you receive one free night at a Marriott hotel when you are approved and every subsequent year on your cardholder anniversary, and you don't have to pay the annual fee until your second year. If you spend $1,000 within your first three months of having the card, you earn a 50,000-point bonus or enough for six complimentary nights at a Marriott hotel. Receive one point per dollar on regular purchases and additional points for Marriott stays, restaurant stays and airline ticket purchases.

The American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card

After making your first purchase with this rewards card, you automatically receive 10,000 bonus points that can be used for up to 12 free nights at a Starwood Properties hotel. Elite members who reach a minimum number of stays enjoy extra perks like later check-out times and free upgrades as well as benefits for their frequent flyer program. The annual fee is lower than many other rewards cards, but American Express charges an international transaction fee.

The Choice Privileges Visa Signature Card

This rewards card sets itself apart by not charging an annual fee, but it does charge international transaction and balance transfer fees. Enjoy a sign-up bonus of 8,000 points on your first purchase as well as 24,000 additional points after using your card for a Choice Hotel stay. Regular purchases earn two points per dollar while Choice Hotel purchases earn 10 to 15 points per dollar.

The Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve

Spend $2,500 within four months of receiving the card to earn certificates for two free weekend-night stays at a Hilton hotel or resort. These stays are valued at around $300 each, more than making up for the annual fee. If you spend at least $10,000 a year using your card, you receive another one-night certificate for a standard room. HHonors members receive three points per dollar spent as well as extra points for Hilton hotel and airline purchases.

Offering enticing advantages ranging from room upgrades to free night stays, credit cards with hotel rewards can add up hundreds of dollars in free perks. Although these cards generally charge an annual fee, frequent travelers may find that the savings greatly outweigh the costs when they play their cards right. These four credit cards have an honest reputation and some of the best hotel rewards around as of 2015.
